The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program promotes ecologically-sound
land management and the conservation of natural resources in our
community. Participation in this Audubon program helps KCGC plan,
organize, implement, and document a comprehensive environmental and
animal management program.
The Value of "Audubon Cooperative Sanctuaries"
The biological heritage of North America-- its genetic resources,
native species of plants and animals, diverse habitats, and ecological
processes -- is not confined to nature preserves. In fact, an
estimated 75% of the land in the United States is privately managed. Used for farming, housing, recreation, timber, and manufacturing, this
managed landscape plays a pivotal role in maintaining biodiversity and
supporting a high quality of life.
"Audubon Cooperative Sanctuaries" are private and public properties
that complement preserved lands. They contribute to the conservation
of resources and the protection of both common and rare plants and
wildlife. In short, they are part of a conservation landscape
increasingly made up of a mosaic of property types. For more
